The Best Graphics Freeware
Have you ever wished you had enough money for that high-end graphics package? Well, here are a few
free programs which may be of interest to you.
POV-Ray - The Persistence of Vision Raytracer - 3D
The best freeware raytracer that I know of. I have used this for years, and it seems there is always
something new to learn.
A small list of the features supported:
~realistic reflective/refractive objects
~reflected and refracted caustics
~global illumination (radiosity)
~real volumetrics
~powerful texture definition
This is a standalone 3D rendering package. It is code-based, so some programming experience will go
a long way towards learning it.
Blender - 3D
I'm just starting to learn this one. Some features include: GUI modeling, global illumination, integrated
support for the YAFRAY raytracer, plus much more. Also, you can create and play your own 3D video
games! Check it out!
GIMP - Gnu Manipulation Program - 2D Raster
Here is the best freeware replacement to PhotoShop I've ever seen. All of PhotoShop's best features
are there: layers, alpha channels, various selection tools, editable brushes, tons of filters, masked
painting..... the list goes on. You can't miss this one!
SodiPodi - 2D Vector
A program for creating vector images. Similar to Adobe Illustrator, but not nearly as complete. Good
enough if you don't have the funds for a commercial package.
DrawPlus - 2D Vector
Another vector-editing program similar to SodiPodi, but with a few differences. The website also has
some other freeware packages.
Irfan View - Image Viewing and Conversion
This program has come through for me innumerable times. With it, you can view all the images in a
directory very easily. You can navigate either by mouse or by keyboard for extra speed. It features
full-screen viewing with interpolation between pixels and many importing/exporting options. This program
is essential for anyone who views images on his/her computer!
