CalTel News

CalTel has been receiving Copyright Infringement notices from copyright-holders on a weekly basis. As copyright infringement can result in the loss of your internet service, we want to make it clear how we handle copyright infringement.

Companies who own copyrights on certain materials (primarily record labels, movie companies) scan the Internet for people who are distributing content (songs, movies) that they hold the copyright on. When they find someone who is sharing something they own, they can trace it back to the Internet Service Provider (CalTel), and we have an obligation to remove the content being shared.

When we receive a copyright notice we will notify the account owner of the infringement. Depending on how many notifications we have received, we will take the following action:

FIRST Copyright Infringement Notification: The customer will be contacted. If we cannot contact the customer within three business days or if we are not satisfied that the infringing content has been removed, the account will be put on a temporary disconnect until the customer is contacted.

SECOND Copyright Infringement Notification: The account will be completely closed and the customer will not be eligible to reopen the account for 6 months from the date of closure.

THIRD Copyright Infringement Notification: The account will be completely closed and the customer will not be eligible to reopen the account for 1 year from the date of closure.

FOURTH Copyright Infringement Notification: The account will be completely closed and the customer will not be eligible to reopen the account.
